ON THE ROAD WITH GEORGE AND ROSETTA

George has wanted to travel cross country for a couple years now. He decided this year would be the year. We plan to leave the first week in April. Our first plans were to go to Mississippi. Since our dear friend Ann Kohl is very sick we decided to go to Florida to see her. We knew the trip could wait a few days. At this time I think it is important to spend time with Ann and John.  We had a wonderful week visiting with Ann and John.  Now we have began our trip west with our traveling companions.

We traveled from Eustis, Fl to Tallahassee, FL to Robertsdale, AL to New Orleans, LA. We got to New Orleans just as the French Quaters Festival began.

One of the things George wanted to do before we left New Orleans was to eat Crawdads.  The last day at the campground we found out they were having an all you could eat crawdad feast.  George ate all the crawdads he could.  Since I do not eat crawdads he ate my portion also.

One of the places we wanted to visit in San Antonio, TX was the Alamo.  I guess I have read about the Texas fight for independence from Mexico and have seen just about every movie about the Alamo this was a must.  Walking the grounds where men such as Travis, Bowie and Crockett died and reading the history of this fight gave a better meaning and understanding that I gained from any source from the past.   This short battle (1 and a quarter hour) was significant in the history of our country.

This old tree on the grounds of the Alamo complex was so big you could not get it all in the picture.  The tree was so large that the limbs had to be supported by sitting on the ground.

We met a volunteer at the Alamo and he asked me  "if I knew why Texans were the smartest people in the world".  I said no I did not.  He told me that Texans has the only sewer that people around the world come to see (The River Walk in San Antonio)

We traveled on to the Vineyard RV Resort in Grapevine, TX.  There we met our cousin Sheree who took us on a tour of Dallas.  The highlight of the tour was the Dallas Cowboy Stadium.  We had a wonderful visit with Sheree and the sightseeing was also great.

Enroute to Amarillo we stopped at a rest stop and saw the sign below.  Now you know you are in the wilderness.

We had a short stay in Amarillo, TX.  While there we visited the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian.  There were Indian artifacts, paintings, photographs and many other items for viewing.

Then we moved on to the Cadillac Ranch.  If you have never been there there are ten Cadillacs buried almost half way in the ground in an open field.  People come armed with spray paint cans to leave their mark.  Others use the cars for photo opportunities.

Later that evening we had dinner at the Big Texan resturant home of the 72 ounce steak.  If you eat a salad, three fried shrimp, one potatoe and the 72 ounce steak in one hour the meal is free.  There was one taker while we were there.  We did not stay for the whole show but by the time we were leaving  he had 30 minutes left to finish the meal.  Seeing what he had on his plate and the way he was eating, you could tell he was never going to finish that meal.

Our next stop was Albugueque New Mexico.  We spent one day walking the Rinconda Canyon Trails which has the largest Petroglyph Sites. We saw ancient drawings that are still preserved today.

This is one of the many bridges we saw in this area. I just had to take a picture of them. They are sand color and blue stripes on the side. Looks a lot better than the plain concrete we see at home.

Saturday 5 May 2012

This is neat, would you believe that this is a church in the rocks. We actually drove up to it. The only time you cannot go to the church is Easter, Christmas and New years. The roads are narrow and cannot handle the amount of traffic that would come at those times of year. It is hard to believe that someone built this church on the top of a mountain

The day we took these pictures it was very hot. Inside the building George is in was extremly cool. I am on the top floor of the room George is in. Just think now days we need air conditioners to stay cool.

These pictures were taken in the painted desert. In the background shot of the first mountain they are red and white. The ones with George are light blue and white. You cannot see the true colors as you would see in person. This is truly the work of mother nature.

We drove this coast line three quarter of the way. It is so beautiful. The road is parallel to the ocean.

This is the view in front of our campsite.

These wood carvings were done in ninety minutes.Pure talent at the end sold to the highest bidder.

Portland Oregon
18 June 2012

This is the view from the top of a hill. We were looking down this river.

There were lots of waterfalls on this road. This one we had to walk down to also walk back up.
Thank goodness they had benches along the way to sit on.

We were told a bride had pictures taken on the bridge behind us. And of all days a loose log
came over the cliff and the whole party got soaking wet.
